Set against the backdrop of the formation of National Southwest Associated University (commonly known as 'Lianda'), the story follows intellectuals in Beiping and the choices and sacrifices made by two generations to keep the flames of civilization alive.

Beiping fell to Japanese forces in 1937. Several northern universities decided to move south to Changsha, however, war soon broke out. Meng Hai Tang a lecturer at the National Peking University School of Medicine, had to flee with the young students. In order to preserve their national heritage, a group of Chinese intellectuals came to form the National Southwest Associated University ("Lianda") while in exile.

Hai Tang and Zhang Qi fell in love. Upon arriving in Chongqing, they supported each other in establishing a medical school under Peking University. However, Hai Tang was dismissed from her position. The couple travelled west to Kunming, got married and reestablished a medical school in Mengzi. During the Battle of Northern Burma and Western Yunnan, Hai Tang and Zhang Qi led students to provide medical aid. No matter how hard, these are people who embody the fearless university spirit of contemporary youth.

The story is set during a time where the Tang Dynasty was at war. Lei Fa is the daughter of a respected Sai Leung general. Her mother died when she was young, so she has been raised by her father and brothers and developed a forthright, outspoken personality as a result.[1] Her martial arts master, the Holy Mother of Lei Mountain, tells her that she is destined to marry a Tang citizen and their marriage will unite the two kingdoms and bring about a time of peace and harmony. Unfortunately for her, her destined husband turns out to be Sit Ding San. His father is Sit Yan Kwai, a renowned and loyal general of the Tang Dynasty. The Sit family is very prejudiced against Sai Leung citizens, as they have long been at war against each other. The show follows Lei Fa as she wins Ding San's love, his family's affections and the respect and loyalty of the Tang troops.

The story focuses on the conflicts between the young teachers and the problems that high school students have. Jang Yi San is a timid and incompetent homeroom teacher who has to teach the only daughter of a highly dangerous mob leader, Eun Byul. Eun Byul is a new student at MyungMoon High with little drive to succeed.
